FAQs - Charging your Electric Vehicle at Home

The everchanging and fast evolving world of electric vehicles can be hard to keep up with. Here at Evergreen, we have answered the questions we get asked the most when it comes to home electric vehicle charging stations.

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle using a home electric vehicle charging station? An EV is rarely charged from empty, but if this is necessary it can take around 7 to 8 hours if using a standard 7kW EV charging station. However, the larger the battery the longer it will take to charge.

Why do I need a home electric vehicle charging station? Having an EV charger at home will allow you to charge your electric vehicle as and when you choose. You can also take advantage of cheaper tariffs or self generated power from a solar PV system.

Can home electric vehicle charging stations be connected to your Wifi/mobile phone to control and monitor? Yes, most charging stations are connected to the web and monitoring and control is becoming fairly standard.

I only have a small driveway, can I still get a home electric vehicle charging station? You do need off road parking, so as long as the vehicle can get near to the EV charger there shouldn't be a problem.

Are there different types of home electric vehicle charging stations? There are different manufacturers of EV chargers.

Our household has two cars, how many cars can charge from one home electric vehicle charging station? This depends on the type of electrical supply the property has. You may be lucky and have a three phase or a split phase supply, but it would be more usual for there to be a single phase supply, therefore one EV charger would be normal and this would need to be shared, so the vehicles would have to use the charger at different times.

I don’t have a driveway or garage, can I still have a home electric vehicle charging station? Safety is the primary concern. If a lead can get to the vehicle in a safe way then this could be possible, but usually the answer to this question is no.

Installation & Tech

Can I install a home electric vehicle charging station myself? No, it should be installed by a qualified electrician who has also passed an EV charger installation course.

Will a standard home electric vehicle charging station work on all types of electric cars? Most home chargers have a Type 2 interface. You must have a compatible charger and EV.

Are home electric vehicle charging stations safe? If installed and operated correctly then the answer is yes.

How can I find out where there are public electric vehicle charging stations close to me? There are many apps and websites which can help you locate a suitable charging station. For example, Zap-Map, Carwow, Vauxhal Point Finder, and many more.

What do 3.6kW, 7kW and 22kW mean when talking about home electric vehicle charging stations? These figures relate to the power rating of each charger. The larger the number the less the charging time.

What’s the difference between tethered and untethered home electric vehicle charging stations? A tethered EV charging station has a lead permanently connected to it and this plugs directly into the EV.  An untethered EV charging station will have a socket which you can plug your own lead into.

Grants & Costs

How much does it cost to install a home electric vehicle charging station? It costs between £850 to £1,500 to install a Smart EV Charger, depending on the type of charger and the complexity of the cabling.

Are there grants available to help pay for installing a home electric vehicle charging station? Yes, there is a £350 grant from OZEV (Office for Zero Emmision Vehicles) for domestic installations.

How much does it cost to charge an electric vehicle at home using a home electric vehicle charging station? This depends on the price per kWh the homeowner pays for their electricity. A full charge on a standard tariff would be around £10 to £15. However, some energy suppliers offer tariffs which allow cheaper charging overnight.
